Hairstyles in the 40's were very feminine for women. Soft curls were common and hair was usually styled away from the face so as to show off a woman's facial features. Bright red lipstick for the lips was in vogue.
This picture was taken in 1979 to 80 and shows the typical hairstyles of this time. Women wore their hair feathered back and curled with a curling iron. Blue and teal eyeshadow was quite popular. This young lady is shown here with her dad who is wearing the large framed glasses that were big then.

Marilyn Monroe was a popular icon of the 1950's and her classic platinum blonde style was copied by many then and now. Marilyn typically wore her hair in a short to medium length wavy hairstyle that was considered to be very sexy for her time. She wore bright red lipstick that showcased her lovely lips as they stood out against her colorless hair.

Here is a photograph of a young woman in the early part of the 20th century.
The 1920's were a time of transformation for females and hairstyles were part of this. Prior to this time, women generally wore their hair long. The craze to cut their hair into short bobs swept the country and abroad. The Marcel wave was very popular and this gal has one big wave in the front while the sides appear to be twisted into small curls at about ear length. She may actually have longer hair but pinned it up to give the look of short hair in a faux bob. The strands on top are combed forward and swooped around to form bangs on the forehead. She probably has a bun in the back. This was one way to get a short hairstyle without cutting the hair. This may have been a good option for those who wanted the option for long hairstyles as well.
This young woman is donning some real 40's charm in this photograph taken in the late 1940's. She is sporting tight pin-curls on top with the sides pulled back and held in place with bobbypins. The back of her hair is curly also but in a more subtle fashion. She is wearing a feminine sheer blouse with lacey camisole and has a vintage heart shaped pin. Women of this peirod typicalled wore dark-red lipstick which was associated with Hollywood glamour.
