1940's Pin Curls
This young woman is donning some real 40's charm in this photograph taken in the late 1940's. She is sporting tight pin-curls on top with the sides pulled back and held in place with bobbypins. The back of her hair is curly also but in a more subtle fashion. She is wearing a feminine sheer blouse with lacey camisole and has a vintage heart shaped pin. Women of this peirod typicalled wore dark-red lipstick which was associated with Hollywood glamour.
Women back then did not have the luxury of hand held blow-dryers, so hairstyling began the night before. Hair was washed in the evening and then styled while wet. Hair was wound around the finger and then pinned in place to allow for drying during the night. In the morning the hairpins were removed and the curls were styled with the fingers rather than a brush to prevent pulling them out of style.
