Full of retro charm, this color photo shows the hairstyles, clothes, and furniture that was popular during this post WWII decade.

1950's Couple

The man is wearing a suit and tie and has slicked back short dark hair while the woman is dressed in a party gown. Her dress has netted fabric in layers that is floor length and the skirt portion is full. Her hairstyle is short and curly and very typical of this era. Women traded their longer glam curls for shorter and more conservative locks in the 50's. These two are sitting on a couch ready to attend a wedding. The coffee table is full on contemporary.

This one by Amanda Seyfried is reminiscent of the 1920's finger waves with long lovely tresses that are ultra glam and feminine.

You can get a look like this one using with a  1 – 1/2" curling iron held vertically and working in sections, wind the strands around the barrel leaving the ends free. Spray first with hairspray and then curl. Gently brush out with a vent brush and fingers. This is a soft and beautiful style perfect for any occasion whether formal or casual.

Charlize Theron

She has an off center part and her sleek mane shows lots of movement as it slips forward over the shoulder on one side. The other half is directed to the rear and backside as the top section here is placed behind the ear. The ends are finger styled to add bends that soften the look. She has blonde highlights mixed throughout and the dark natural shade can bee seen the part. Her red strapless dress looks terrific with fair skin tone.

What did little girls of the 1930's wear and how was their hair cut?

1930's Girls

This is an endearing photo from about 1933 showing two siblings standing with their arms around one another. They both have bobs, one is straight and one is curly. The girl on the right has bangs with a length that hits just past the ears. This short style was very popular during this era as women were entering the workforce in numbers and wanted an easy care cut. The kids were given the same haircuts which saved time and energy. They are wearing sun suits that were typically one piece and these have halter tops that synch up at the neck. The bottom half is like shorts with full and loose legs.

There is something very romantic about a WWII couple and this vintage photo shows a US Army Air Force crewman with his sweetheart while home on leave.

1940's WWII couple

This is my aunt and uncle so I know the story. This man was a tail gunner on a B17 bomber during WWII. He came home on one leave during his deployment and this photo was taken at that time. He is wearing his military uniform and has his arm around his young wife who is wearing her hair in a classic pin up style. Her hair is dark, full of curls, and shoulder length. The top has height while the sides are bobby pinned close to the scalp to give the appearance of a partial updo. It was common for women of this era to wear a simple white blouse and a patterned print skirt that has a wide waist band and pleats. The length is to the knee. Her shoes lace up and bobby socks were fashionable.

Here is a close up shot to see her hairstyle much more easily.

How to get her style: first you will need setting lotion, water, bobby pins, rattail comb, and hair dryer. Working with sections apply water if not already wet and setting lotion prior to winding the strands into a circle and then pinning to the scalp with bobby pins using two in a criss-cross fashion. After locks are dry (either by air or hair dryer), use fingers to comb through the curls. Some back combing on top of the underneath layers will add volume. Pin the sides down by pulling some strands from the face at eye level toward the back. Hairspray to finish off will keep the 'do in place.
