The punk rocker look was wildly popular in the 1980s and is still around today. This woman is wearing a Rod-Stewart-like hairdo with tall and stiff spikes that adorn the top of the head while some strands hang straight down. Her long pieces are braided. The black hair matches her black and red bold get up. Fish net stockings cover her legs and crazy patterns are seen everywhere. There are stripes and checks and lace. This retro era was known for its random choices in design and color and bold was big.
Fuzzy spiral curls spell rocker girl style. This woman is shown here with her microphone and wild hair. Honey blonde with lighter highlights brightens up the mood. This one is reminiscent of the days of hair bands.

As the 80's passed to the end of that decade and turned toward the 90's, the big hair was still alive but it changed just a little bit. The classic 1980s puffy top 'do was about to be put to rest, but the fluff was not yet dead. The gradual transition from top heavy to bottom heavy was taking shape. This picture of a bunch of girlfriends from that era (pic was taken around 1989) shows a variety of hairstyles, but they have one thing in common: curly locks. It looks like there are a couple of examples of mall bangs here like the gal on the upper left and right. A popular early 90's look was the spiral perm bob as seen on the woman in the front row and right of center.

Here is a great example of typical 80's style. First we have the bi-level, which was hot then, and is nothing more than big hair on top and long locks in the back. The sides are cut above the ears and the strands are directed upward with lots of strong hold hair spray ( the kind that does not allow your hair to move at all ) and then height is achieved with a curling iron and more shellac-like spray. Evidence of mall bangs can be seen with the first layer laying downward with the second brushed up and back. This hairstyle is shoulder length and of course was better for fine hair to make it look thicker. Big dangly earrings were in vogue then.

If you love spiral curls and lots of them, take a look at this very full head of small twists. This style is reminiscent of the poodle perms from the 80's and still looks hot for today's hairstyles. If you have naturally kinky curly hair, then this hairdo would be easy to copy with a little curl enhancing shampoo and a diffuser attachment on the blow-dryer. Twist sections of hair while drying and then use fingers to style rather than trying to brush through it which would just make a big bushy mess. For those with straight locks, a visit to your professional hair stylist for a spiral perm might be the answer to help with this style. Every one's hair is different and outcomes may vary.
