The sides are pulled up and held into place with bobby pins. The bangs are curled up and secured with bobby pins as well.
This young woman happens to be my mom so I know that she has naturally very straight hair. One method women used to curl their hair was to sleep with pin curls. Freshly washed hair at night was pinned up to dry by morning with curls and waves.
