The 80's big short hair was wild looking and the sides were usually shorter than the back, otherwise known as the bi-level.

Curly perms were all the rage and if you wanted to be cool in this decade, you got yourself a salon permanent. The smell was awful but it was worth it to get the big look. Lots of strong hold hair gel was used to get the roots to stand up and then shellac-like hairspray was used.

Here's a fun and different short and wild hairstyle.

This red haired lady has super short bangs that are cut in an arch shape to follow the borders of the face. This area is styled straight and smooth and combed forward while the rest of the locks spring into action with random spikes. A curling iron could be used to get some bend in the strands as they stick up in the back. A strong hold hair product would be necessary to sustain this look.

This almost resembles a Hollywood glamor look for a 1940s male but this 'do is very feminine and sexy with slicked back sides and one large curl on the top front with a delicate strand of beads placed there.

This style shouts trendy and funky at the same time. The haircut is short on the sides and cut above the ears. The top is parted on the side and is stick straight while being left long so as to allow it to be directed forward in a big way like we see here. A ton of strong hold hair gel and spray will be necessary to copy this look.

Typical 80's Fashion

Here is a great example of typical 80's style. First we have the bi-level, which was hot then, and is nothing more than big hair on top and long locks in the back. The sides are cut above the ears and the strands are directed upward with lots of strong hold hair spray ( the kind that does not allow your hair to move at all ) and then height is achieved with a curling iron and more shellac-like spray. Evidence of mall bangs can be seen with the first layer laying downward with the second brushed up and back. This hairstyle is shoulder length and of course was better for fine hair to make it look thicker. Big dangly earrings were in vogue then.
