80's big hair

Curly perms were all the rage and if you wanted to be cool in this decade, you got yourself a salon permanent. The smell was awful but it was worth it to get the big look. Lots of strong hold hair gel was used to get the roots to stand up and then shellac-like hairspray was used.

If you love to keep up with cutting edge styles and edgy with a touch of retro, then Amber Heard is one to watch for what is new to come. She is sporting a messy and disheveled 80's big hair look here with a side swept ponytail. Her locks are less than perfect looking, have a matte finish, and are back combed for that big umph. What a fun look for a party as this is a hot new look for fall.

Back in the late 80's, we tried to make our hair look as big as possible even if we had a fine or thin mane. Here in this photo taken back in the day, we can see a true retro experience with mouse, curling iron, and lots of hairspray. Lots of layering around the top of this wavy bob with bangs allows there to be lift on top gaining that big hair look. Volume producing hair products are worked into the roots prior to blow-drying then lifting with a vent brush while concentrating the air there will help to get this flash back look.

Steven Tyler with his long wavy rocker funk 'do is a great example of what 80s hair band is all about. If you are old enough to remember watching MTV back then and seeing Aerosmith with their popular videos such as "Dude Looks Like a Lady," then you know that this man has not changed much in the past 20 years. He still wears his locks in big hair fashion. His latest trend seems to be adding feathers of different colors as ornaments to dangle amongst the bed head strands. He actually has a suit jacket on here which is quite the contrast to his spandex from decades past. His skull necklace is probably made of platinum or white gold and is a cool idea for a gift of jewelry for the man in your life (providing he is the old school rocker type).

This look might be a bit much for most, but there is something here for everyone and this curly style is big and full of volume. The top of this hairdo is straight and smooth and her bangs are as well.  She has pretty red locks that look lovely with her peaches and cream complexion. Her veil is draped across her forehead in an asymmetrical way.

The mid 1980s was a time of big hair and spiral perms that resembled something you would see on a poodle. Curly locks were definitely in and here is a picture of a women sporting a pretty good likeness.

As the 80's passed to the end of that decade and turned toward the 90's, the big hair was still alive but it changed just a little bit. The classic 1980s puffy top 'do was about to be put to rest, but the fluff was not yet dead. The gradual transition from top heavy to bottom heavy was taking shape. This picture of a bunch of girlfriends from that era (pic was taken around 1989) shows a variety of hairstyles, but they have one thing in common: curly locks. It looks like there are a couple of examples of mall bangs here like the gal on the upper left and right. A popular early 90's look was the spiral perm bob as seen on the woman in the front row and right of center.

Here is a great example of typical 80's style. First we have the bi-level, which was hot then, and is nothing more than big hair on top and long locks in the back. The sides are cut above the ears and the strands are directed upward with lots of strong hold hair spray ( the kind that does not allow your hair to move at all ) and then height is achieved with a curling iron and more shellac-like spray. Evidence of mall bangs can be seen with the first layer laying downward with the second brushed up and back. This hairstyle is shoulder length and of course was better for fine hair to make it look thicker. Big dangly earrings were in vogue then.
