1940's Picnic

1960's

Everybody here has short hair. Mom has a typical curled style that was most likely set on rollers the night before. The bangs are brushed straight up and back for height and she sides are curled under right at the ear. The little girl has a pixie cut and a most hysterical expression showing missing teeth, the older sister has a bob with a touch of curl at the ends, and the young boy has a short crew cut. Button up shirts from plain white, to checks, to patterns were popular along with rolled up jeans. And we must not forget those unforgettable cat eye glasses. The year was about 1966.

O.K., so if you are old enough to remember the 60s, you might recall wearing curlers to get the look, or might have memories of seeing women in the grocery stores with hairnets and those curl things especially if you were just a kid back then. We cannot forget the bright red lips as this was an important part of the look back then. Here is a funny 70s picture of a pre-teen sporting a typical hairstyle for that time as well as an example of some of the fashions for that time. A long granny style skirt that looks like a bedspread and the top looks like something from the 1800's with puffy short sleeves and gathered round neck. Obviously shoes were an after thought as blue and red tennis shoes are hardly appropriate but comfortable. This 12 year old's hair is long and straight and parted on the side with a clip holding the bangs over to the side. Using clips was very popular in the early 1970s to hold the hair out of the eyes as no-style hairstyles were cool during this time. Notice the furnishings like the television on the right (that had no remote as children were the channel changers) and the early American decor. The carpet and curtains were a brownish gold color.

Here is a great example of the popular cat-eye glasses and hairstyles of the 1950s for women. The rims of these glasses are dark at the top outside corners and they come up to a point. Her hair is very short and wavy which was very typical for this time period for more mature ladies. Styles were generally on the conservative side, except for those specs of course which were probably considered a bit risky.

This photograph is straight out of the 70's and to be more specific: 1976. This hairstyle looks amazingly similar to those we see today with the long soft waves. Back in this decade, a middle part without bangs was typical. The early part of this era showed more straight styles, but waves began to make an appearance and usually were accomplished with hot rollers. Here we see how the strands are smooth down to about ear level and then the bends begin. This could be very fashonable by today's standards.
