The 1960s flip hairstyle was a popular fashion statement for that decade. Women with shoulder length hair could easily curl the ends up and out for a fun and sassy look. The early 60s brought about the bouffant which could be incorporated into this style as we see here in this photograph taken in about 1968. An off center part gives way to a bang-less forehead. The top back portion is back combed and smoothed over to add lift and fullness. For how to information on how they got that bouffant, check out that link.

Looking for a great way to turn a bob hairstyle into a retro hairdo? Here is a cute look using a headband. This is a very short version of this time-less and popular "do." Hair is cut at chin length and bangs are cut straight across just hitting the eyebrow and then graduating slightly at the sides. This is a great style for a narrow face bringing width to it. The strands on the top are back combed with the top layer smoothed over to get the look of a bouffant and then a wide headband is placed. What a great way to turn a simple bob into a retro 60's look.

Women of the 60's who wanted a more conservative version of the big bouffant opted for a tamed down puffy hairdo like this one. In the 40's and 50's many gals pulled their locks up in the back and this practice carried over to the 60's for some. Ratting the top portion and then smoothing over the top layer gave height as we see here and then the back was secured into an updo. Lots of Aquanet hairspray was used to keep those strands in place.

The shag hairstyle began in the late 60's and was strong into the early 70's. This photograph was taken around 1970 and shows the hair and fashion that was hot during this time with men and women. This young woman's hairstyle has the typical hourglass shape that came from the transformation of the bouffant which was full and round on top. Then, the fringes of longer pieces that came down the neck and flipped up, just like the Florence Henderson hairdo from the Brady Bunch, made the shag just that.

If you are looking for a cute way to wear your hair with a trendy headband, then check out this cute style. This young woman has curly hair but has styled it into a straightened 60s hairdo with the use of hair products and a flat iron. First she uses a straightening balm and then uses a large round brush when blow-drying. She runs over the strands with a flat iron one small section at at time. The top crown of her head is back combed to add some height and then the outer layer is smoothed over for a clean look. Some hair spray is added at the end. A wide polka-doted headband is placed for a fabulous retro statement. This hair accessory has an elasticized bottom to allow it to stay in place better.

That 60s bouffant seems to be the popular thing these days as Hilary Duff shows us during her live performance on NBC's The Today Show Concert Series. A little back combing on top or a great hair product by Aveda called "hair potion" can transform flat hair into big hair. For today's take on the traditional beehive, long hair in back will get you there with bangs brushed to the side and the front section pulled up and back. This style shows off the length along with the height at the crown.

Back in the 1960's, woman often wore hairpieces and wigs to help them get that bouffant hair that was so highly sought after during that decade. Especially those with fine and thin hair looked into purchasing these hair accessories. Even gals with thicker hair may have looked into these choices because as shown in this period photo, it probably would have been difficult to get this height without a little extra help. This hairstyle could be classified as bee-hive. It looks like there may have been 2 hairpieces used here. For more help with 60's hairstyles how to, you may want to check out that link.
