Jamie Carson could step off the set of the Partridge Family or the Laugh In Tv show from the late 60s or early 70s.

The early 1960's still held conservative attitudes toward hair and many boys wore crewcuts:
crewcut
The top and sides are cut super short and because of a cowlick right near the front, there are some unruly tufts that want to do their own thing. In today's world, those random strands make this style practically up to date.

Here is a great example of a family on vacation back in the day.
Everybody here has short hair. Mom has a typical curled style that was most likely set on rollers the night before. The bangs are brushed straight up and back for height and she sides are curled under right at the ear. The little girl has a pixie cut and a most hysterical expression showing missing teeth, the older sister has a bob with a touch of curl at the ends, and the young boy has a short crew cut. Button up shirts from plain white, to checks, to patterns were popular along with rolled up jeans. And we must not forget those unforgettable cat eye glasses. The year was about 1966.

This woman found this really nice and realistic hair piece at a speciality shop in Las Vegas. She said that they really study your face and skin color there to fit you with something perfect.

The 1960s and 70s were a time when young people protested war and fought for peace and love and they did so with flowers in their hair as they wore tie dye and beads. This young woman has long kinky curls and a daisy tucked behind one ear (daisies are a retro flower). She has tiny rectanglur sunglasses, a brightly color splashed tank top, and is flashing the peace sign.

Here is a great example of the classic 60s bouffant flip hairstyle. This one has huge volume with lots of back combing to create a big hump. The ends flip up to add a sassy edge to this 'do. This woman is also sporting some great fashion ideas from this time like a cropped blouse and straight legged pants that hit above the ankle.

Here's a picture of a teacher from the 1960s with a big bouffant flip. This woman has plenty of height on the top of her head as it looks as though there are at least 8 inches of ratted curls there. This was a popular hairstyle during this time period and celebrities like That Girl had something very similar.

O.K., so if you are old enough to remember the 60s, you might recall wearing curlers to get the look, or might have memories of seeing women in the grocery stores with hairnets and those curl things especially if you were just a kid back then. If you were not born yet, consider yourself lucky that you did not have to endure this. This pre-teen girl is playing with some younger children while her locks dry into perfect little curls on the top of her head. This was any easy way to get some lift for those poofy 'dos. Notice the neatly arranged group of short strands right in front of her ear. They used Dippity Do for that.

Here we have a young woman with an example of early 1960s hair, sweater, skirt, and shoes. This gal is standing out on an old country dirt road with her arms folded just like a teenager would do if she was not into whatever was going on here. She is wearing a white blouse that is tucked into a full skirt that comes around the waist and is very puffy. It looks like she is wearing some kind of slip that might had fullness as well. Her shoes are simple slip-ons and are flats. Her hair is cut in a fashion that would be consistent with the decade prior, but she has plenty of lift on top from back-combing and that is definitely a sign that the 60s were in full swing with the bouffant.

Anna Maria Perez looks like a hit here in this picture of her taken at the Shizue Boutique Grand Opening Summer Soiree in Beverly Hills on June 26th 2008. She has got some real retro sparkle here with her bouffant on top and long spiral curls below. This hairstyle has the appearance of a partial updo with the back combing on the crown. The hair is pulled straight back and smoothed over the top of the ratted underneath layers and secured high on the back of the head with a clip. This would help to get the height that we see here. The bangs are flat ironed and brushed to one side. She is holding a cute little dog in her arms and toting a fancy hand bag in the other.

There is a strong 60's influence here with this young man's hairstyle. It features a full bang that is combed forward and over to one side. There are layers in graduated lengths on the side and they come down to about mid ear. He has a touch of wave to his strands that add just a bit of a bed head look which is popular right now.

What a cute 60s retro look this is with a bob hairstyle and headband accessory in bright pink. She has a matching handbag in the same flashy color with matching lipstick. Her hair is dark brown, short, and straight with a heavy bang that is cut straight across with a little tapering at the sides.

Now, here is a hairdo that reflects the retro 80s as well as the 60s in the fact that it combines the big full hair and the ratted bouffant. This is a partial updo with the back left down and long almost resembling the mane of a horse, and the sides are pulled up and secured at the back of the crown. The long strands at the top front are back combed and full of firm hold hair product to help it keep its shape which is tall and swirled around. This is certainly an eye catcher for those to who love to stand out. What a wild style but at the same time, its kind of fun and remotely cute.

I remember the holidays in the early 70s when the adults were still stuck in the 60s like we see here with the bouffant. The adults are usually a decade or so behind on the current styles, but stick around because the styles always come around again with a few new twists. All different types of retro are in today.

Hippies were well known in the 60s and 70s. They were usually those in the younger generation (teens and 20 something year olds) who wanted to set themselves apart from the conservative folks. They did this by growing their hair long and often in a no-style fashion. Usually hair was parted in the middle and bang-less. During this time period, long side burns were the thing for men. Headbands were popular and served to keep the sweat out of the eyes, but actually they were merely a fashion statement. Aviator sunglasses along with tie-dye including bright colors finish off the look.

Now, here's a stylish new wave hairstyle for men. Long bangs brushed forward and to one side is a retro look that gets its roots from the 60s. The sides are cut short above the ears with some longer strands near the face and then the back comes down to the bottom of the neck. This bi-level style is and 80s look big time.

This picture was taken in 1964 and is a great example of what types of hairstyles you might have seen on women and girls. The woman standing in the background is in her early 20's and is sporting a bouffant without bangs. Her hair is pulled up into an updo with much height and fullness that was accomplished with ratting the strands and products such as Dippity Do and Aquanet. Her eye make-up is dramatic with dark liner that extends past the corners. The mom has a bleach blonde poof doo. The child has a pixie cut and back then parents usually cut their kid's hair which is obvious with the uneveness.

Wow, here is an example of what might have been crazy back in the 60's. What a tall head of hair! This woman's hairstyle has the height of a beehive. Her dark hair is ratted and hairsprayed into a style that is tall enough to look like a top hat. The sides are short and cut at about mid-ear to show her dangle earrings. Her bangs are cut short. What a look! The cat wearing the cat-eye sunglasses is a nice touch as well.

What a great example of a typical 60's family and their hairstyles and clothing. This picture was taken along side a pool in the backyard and shows a mom with her short softly curled hairdo with the top being ratted for the bouffant effect, the dad with his flat top crew cut and heavy rimmed sunglasses, and the kid with her typical pixie cut that was done by her mother and very chopped up.

This picture shows three generations of women and was taken back in the early 60's. The young lady in the middle is a teenager here and we see the bouffant hair which was just beginning to make an entrance during this time. The woman on the right is the mom and she is still sporting a more conservative 50's hairstyle that is styled more closely to the head and not as full as the younger generation was wearing at the time. The woman on the left is of course the grandmother and she looks like she is wearing something in between the two hairdos. The ladies are wearing peddle pushers which would be similar to today's capri pants only fitting close to the leg. Patterned fabrics were popular back then as well as 3/4 length sleeves and boat necks.

If you are looking for pictures to help you see what was hot for men's hairstyles and fashion back in the 1960s and 1970s, then check these out. The photo above shows a young man in the late 60s to early 70s. He has a side part with full bang combed over and the sides are straight and cover the ears. Long side burns were definitely in with full eyebrows and mustaches. Red pants with a cuff at the bottom along with white slip on shoes.

A trendy men's hairstyle is what we have here. This teen has a 60s-ish haircut with the full bang that is combed forward. Take a look at this post here and see the similarities in style. Back then the sides were generally shorter so as to expose the ears, but this picture shows a modern edge to this retro look. This is almost an inverted bob for guys. If you are the sort who likes to stay up on the latest, then this may be for you. It works well with straight and even fine locks.
