In my opinion, this book by Lauren Rennells is fabulous.
Women of the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's, generally wore their hair with waves and curls. These bends in their strands matched the naturally curvy nature of a woman's body which was considered to be very feminine and sexy. Many modern gal's are turning to the past for inspiration for their own hairstyles. Many celebrities are donning these retro looks as well: Reese Witherspoon, Katy Perry, and Madonna to name a few.

If you love vintage hairstyles from the 1950s, here is a great example of how women typically wore their hair back then. Short hair were very popular and so were very short bangs that were curled under. The sides of this style are cut above the ears. We cannot forget the bright red lips as this was an important part of the look back then. These were the days when most mom's stayed home and took care of the husbands and babies and this is a very sweet picture of a gal with her child.

Here is a great example of the popular cat-eye glasses and hairstyles of the 1950s for women. The rims of these glasses are dark at the top outside corners and they come up to a point. Her hair is very short and wavy which was very typical for this time period for more mature ladies. Styles were generally on the conservative side, except for those specs of course which were probably considered a bit risky.

Here's an example of a school picture from the 1950's. This teen girl has a short curly hairstyle that is certainly conservative by today's standards. These were the days of Beaver Cleaver when women stayed home and raised children. Teenagers wore very little if any make-up and kicked around in saddle shoes.

What a great picture of a vintage 1950's bride complete with glamour make-up, princess-like crown and veil, and suit-like wedding dress. The bridal bouquet is beautiful with big Lily's. Women of this time period wore dark red lipstick and dark pencil for eyebrows. The hair is pulled back in a bang-less updo to showcase her lovely face and the beaded and intricately patterned crown adds to the fancy occasion. What a great photo to show what our mothers and grandmothers looked on their big day.

The 1950's were a time when women wore dresses most of the time and dressing up meant wearing a fashion hat, hair neat and tidy and pulled up, a bold beaded necklace, and red lip stick. This woman is sitting in a retro chair that was popular in that decade with her hands folded while posing for this pre-event picture. Her curly locks were all the rage for that time period as well as short bangs. The fashion trends were very conservative with simple lines.

The 50s were a time of happy days and simple life as see here with this woman who is fishing on the river and sporting short curly hair and white cat-eye sunglasses. This decade was still very conservative compared to the days to come. Females often wore easy care permed styles that were generally parted on the side and easily styled.

The 50's were a time of simplicity and Happy Days. Hairstyles reflected that theme as we see in this photo taken around 1957. Women wore their hair short and in easy care styles such as these which have some simple curls. Since blow-dryers were not invented yet, it was common to see women out shopping with curlers and hair nets during the day so they could look lovely at night. It was also popular to use pin curls which was nothing more than winding strands around the finger and securing them with bobby pins until hair dried. Many men chose the flat top crew cut for the then bad boy look. Black horn rimmed glasses topped off the look for men.

Here is a typical example of styles from the 50's. Hair was conservative for the most part and so were the fashions. These were the post war years and most women stayed home while the men worked to support the family. This mother and daughter have a short and wavy hairstyle that is parted on the side and coaxed into gentle waves. Wearing curlers to bed was common and then in the morning hair was brushed into place. Hairstyles were typically short enough to show the bottom of the ears. This was simple and easy to maintain.

1950's charm is seen here in this picture taken of a young man with his convertible car taken in the very early 50's. The 1940's influence in fashion and hair is seen here with hair parted on the side and combed over with a wave in the front. Baggy slacks with cuffs at the bottom, and a little too short by today's standards, top off the vintage look. A preppy looking sweater with big round buttons was typical.

Here is some 50's style with a photograph taken in 1957 that shows what was in at the time for men. Although teenagers may have been sporting ducktails, this gentleman has a typical crew-cut that is flat on top, otherwise known as a flat-top. The barber no doubt buzzed this haircut.
