Back in the day when men were back from WWII, a date with a girl might have been a simple picnic.
1940's Picnic
A drive out to country, a blanket spread on the ground, a thermos, dishes, and lunch food make up a lovely warm afternoon outing. The young lady poses for the camera while sitting on the edge of the blanket with their transportation in the background, which happens to be a vintage car. The woman is wearing her hair pulled back and held there with a bow. She has very short bangs that are curled under and she is wearing glasses. Her white blouse has full baby doll sleeves with ruffles and eyelet around the collar and scoop neck. She is wearing shorts with a high waist.

Up to date and modern interpretation of a vintage 1940s hairstyle:
modern victory rolls
Lots of strong hold hair gel and spray would help to hold the shape of these large rolls that decorate the top portion of this blonde partial updo. Covered bobby pins are a must to secure the curls into place. The back section is left long and and slightly curled. Check here for more information on victory rolls. Sienna is absolutely charming with 1940's cascading blonde soft waves.
Sienna Miller
The length? Hair extensions maybe? This is very possible. A large barrel curling iron held vertically and winding sections around the outside of it and toward the front help to get this look. Her bright blue eyes, dark eyebrows, and red lipstick add to her overall appeal. This photo of her was taken at G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Los Angeles Premiere.

Elizabeth has a pretty feminine hairstyle that shouts 1940's glamour with soft curls that just touch the shoulders.
Elizabeth Banks
This is a simple yet elegant style that works for evening as well as daytime. An off center part with smooth sides that swoosh back behind the ears to show off lovely drop earrings and then give way to soft curls makes this look perfect for a special event.

In my opinion, this book by Lauren Rennells is fabulous.
Women of the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's, generally wore their hair with waves and curls. These bends in their strands matched the naturally curvy nature of a woman's body which was considered to be very feminine and sexy. Many modern gal's are turning to the past for inspiration for their own hairstyles. Many celebrities are donning these retro looks as well: Reese Witherspoon, Katy Perry, and Madonna to name a few.

This celebrity beauty is looking exceptionally glamorous with a retro 40s flash back similar to former Hollywood stars like Lauren Bacall.
She is seen here at the "Four Christmases" World Premiere wearing a black strapless number. Her lovely blonde locks are mid length with a deep side part that swoops her bangs over the forehead with a deliberate bend that gives way to gentle waves and end in a tighter curl at the bottom. The other side tucked behind one ear.

This picture is a great example showing a young man, woman, and baby girl sporting styles for that era. The gentleman is wearing his locks in a slicked back manor with a deliberate part and vaseline was typically used to get the look. A white shirt and suspenders were in for him. The gal has pretty blonde curls that cascade over the shoulder with the sides pulled up and away from the face and secured with bobby pins. The simulation of rolls was common and you can see one big one right on top. Her short puffy sleeve blouse buttons up the front and is fitted with a rounded white collar. Skirts were normally worn. The toddler is wearing two little pigtails with bows.

This young woman is sporting a typical 40s roll hairstyle that is adorned with a headband of flowers. Women and girls of this time period usually used rollers at night with wet hair and slept on them to awake in the morning with neatly curled locks. These were the days before blow-dryers.

Katy Perry looks retro 40s fabulous while performing at NBC's Today Show Summer Concert Series on Friday. Her medium length just past the shoulders curls are pinned up on one side with a lime green bow that stands out against her very dark brown almost black locks. She has a full bang that is curled under which is an old school deal. She looks like a glamor doll whose image may have been painted on the side of a WWII airplane or something. She has a unique style all her own that's for sure.

Retro hairstyles are really big right now and this one is from the decade of the 40s when victory rolls were all the rage. This young woman has her locks rolled toward the back as they cascade down her neck and they are secured into place with bobby pins. She is wearing a red hat that matches her dress and they are both true to form of that era.

Here is a modern, yet classy, yet vintage 40s look that is perfect for a woman who is in touch with her feminine side. This gal has cascading waves and very dark brown hair with a side part and is bang-less. Her very fair skin is a nice contrast to her almost black mane and red lipstick. Her dress is reminiscent of days gone by as well.

Oh my, a retro 40s glamour guy here in this photograph taken in about 1940 is standing in front of a vintage car sporting a dark pin stripe suit and wingtip shoes in black and white. His hair is slicked back with a side part. Men of this era typically wore their locks a little longer but neatly combed back so the ears and forehead would show. He is complete with pipe in teeth and certainly ready for a night out on the town.

Women of the 1940's often wore their hair rolled (victory rolls) in one manner or another as we can see here in this photo taken in about 1946. This post WWII era was a time when hairstyles were really beginning to follow the trends of Hollywood stars. These were the days prior to modern amenities such as blow-dryers and curling irons, so it was necessary to be resourceful. Washing of the hair usually happened at night and then sections were wound around rollers and slept on overnight, or strands were coiled around the finger to form pin curls and secured with bobby pins. This is how women of that time acquired body and bounce and a foundation to create these now vintage hairdos. In the morning, styling began with removal of all apparatus. Then the locks were brushed and coaxed into place. This young gal has a side part and the bangs are rolled back and around and pinned. The side is pulled back and anchored behind the ear with the back left down to touch the collar.

Here is a picture of a teenage boy in the early 40s. His hair is cut short on the sides and long on the top. The long strands were slicked back with grease or lard. This young man has a big wave or swoop of hair on top. He is also wearing the typical eye-glasses of that time. His jeans are baggy are rolled up at the bottom.

Here is a great example of a typical 1940s hairstyle. The young woman is wearing a partial updo which features victory rolls on the sides. She uses an original looking accessory on top that resembles a crown of some kind. Her long dark hair cascades over her shoulders for a very feminine look. Her fair complexion and dark red lips are typical from this post war era and this photograph was taken just after WWII. That is my father in the picture with her.

In the 1940s, women began the trend of looking to the Hollywood starlets for inspiration on hairstyles, and here we have a vintage hairstyle from that era. This gal is sporting cascading waves with bangs rolled back and secured probably with a decorative barrette at the top and back of her head. A popular length during this time was just past the shoulders.

Here is an elegant updo with a hint of vintage. Hair is pulled back from a side part and secured into 2 high pigtails that are rolled up and secured to look like two large buns. This style has a 1940s edge to it and a peacock feather is added for drama. The colors in the feather look wonderful with this model's olive skin tone, dark brown hair and eyes. The colors in her eye make-up were inspired by the shades in the feather such as the cool blue. This hairstyle would look lovely for any evening event.

A vintage 1940s wedding photo can be your inspiration for an old fashioned glamorous big day. The groom has some great Hollywood glamour going on with his longish wavy bangs combed back to mimic popular actors of that time. The bride has a rolled up updo with a tiara and veil. Her bangs are swooped back and tucked beneath her hair accessory and the sides are swirled around as well. This is a very hansom couple.

Here is a beautiful vintage updo with hat. One prominent curl comes down over the forehead and a netted tam hat pinned to one side emulates a typical 1940's hairstyle. Hair is directed around the finger and pinned into to place to get this glamorous look.

In the late 1940's, the victory roll hairstyle was wildly popular. This term was actually used for a fighter plane maneuver, but women adopted it for a fashion statement that celebrated the victory after WWII. This picture shows one woman's version of this hairdo. These were the days before blow-dryers, so it was necessary to come up with ways to style hair that worked for them back then. This is a picture of my mother who had very fine hair. She would put pin curls in her wet hair at night and sleep on them to be styled in the morning. Sections of hair were wound around fingertips and secured to the head with bobby pins. This gave the hair body and curl. Then, the next morning, the strands were brushed up the sides and pinned at the top in rolls. Some rolls were more defined than others.

Madonna is one celebrity who seems to like the 1940's Hollywood glamour and this hairstyle certainly shows that. Women of the 40's began following the stars for inspiration with fashion and hairdos. Feminine looking soft curls were a big hit.

Hairstyles in the 40's were very feminine for women. Soft curls were common and hair was usually styled away from the face so as to show off a woman's facial features. Bright red lipstick for the lips was in vogue.

Men in the 1940's usually wore their hair on the long side and all slicked back. This look was considered to be Hollywood glamorous for men. Bangs were actually grown out long to allow them to be able to style them appropriately for this hairstyle. Men back then visited the barber for their haircut needs and no doubt paid very little compared to what we pay today at the salon. This look is making a comeback for formal attire as seen with Brad Pitt on this post.
