This is a vintage 1920's wavy bob:
Charlize Theron
This would be a beautiful look for a holiday party and would be possible to do with long hair if the back was put up in an updo. Shorter layers would be necessary near the front for the bob look. Charlize has crimped waves here which was ever so popular back in the roaring 20s. She is poised here at AFI FEST 2009 "The Road" Premiere.

Katy seems to love vintage flair as she wore a hip and trendy bob that looks as though it could have appeared at a formal event back in the 1920's.

If a little vintage is in order, take a look at this picture of a 1920s woman with a short bob with side swept bangs and curly ends. The part is placed way over to one side and the top is swooped over. The curls are big a puffy but just concentrated on the bottom third and the rest is smooth and straight.

If you have an oval face, you can wear most hairstyles, but here is a cute vintage option that brings width to the face. This lovely woman has a style that is reminiscent of the 1920's Marcel wave. Her hair is chin length and full of soft finger waves. There is a side part and bangs are combed across the top of the forehead and styled with twists that turn back and forth for a true old fashioned appeal. Her dark blonde mane is sprinkled with lighter highlights and a touch of pink to add a trendy spunk.

What a great example of a modern Marcel wave. This retro hairstyle was ever so popular back in the 1920's when women opted to cut their hair as part of the women's movement. The short bob was the style of choice and these soft waves gave the ladies a feminine edge. This is a very pretty 'do with bangs arranged in an "S" shape up and around the perimeter of the forehead.

Men's hairstyles back in the 1920s were simple. The hair was slicked back for formal or dressy occasions. The top layers were left longer, but they were combed back and greased with tonic to provide a sophisticated look.

This picture shows a 1920s woman with a typical updo from that era. This hairdo was accomplished with short curly hair. The sides were left down and hair was brushed upward toward the center top where bobby pins were used to secure the mass. The tresses on the sides were curled around forward. Jeweled accessories could have been used to dress the look up a bit more for formal events. This is a great example of vintage charm. A pretty blouse and dainty necklace top off the look.

This original photograph came from our archives and has a great example of a flapper girl 1920's hairstyle. The Marcel wave was still very popular and in 1910 women began cutting their hair short as a new sign of freedom from their corsettes and the beginning of a new trend for young ladies entering into the workforce. The Louise Brooks bob was the most famous hairstyle of the 20's. Vintage looks are gaining popularity in today's fashions. It is fun to look at old photos for inspiration.

Here is a photograph of a young woman in the early part of the 20th century. The 1920's were a time of transformation for females and hairstyles were part of this. Prior to this time, women generally wore their hair long. The craze to cut their hair into short bobs swept the country and abroad. The Marcel wave was very popular and this gal has one big wave in the front while the sides appear to be twisted into small curls at about ear length. She may actually have longer hair but pinned it up to give the look of short hair.
