Jesse McCartney is one very popular pop singer and songwriter and he is one to check out for hairstyles. He is sporting a long on top short on the sides spiky haircut. He visited MuchOnDemand at MuchMusic on August 27th.

If you are looking for a cool way to wear your long hair, check out Carmen Electra here at MTV's Mi TRL as she has a hip partial updo that still shows off the length and texture. The ends looking a bit like beachy waves and these could be accomplished by braiding this area and then removing it. The top section is parted in the middle and then pulled back and secured.

Here's a picture of a teacher from the 1960s with a big bouffant flip. This woman has plenty of height on the top of her head as it looks as though there are at least 8 inches of ratted curls there. This was a popular hairstyle during this time period and celebrities like That Girl had something very similar.

Kids back then wore knee socks and keds, saddle shoes, or boat shoes. Most girls wore their locks long and without much style, while the boys wore long full bangs with short sides.

A well know country singer who has enviable hair is seen here wearing a lovely halter dress and partial updo with long straight locks that brush over the shoulder and adorn the front of the outfit. Carrie Underwood happens to be the young lady and she is one to watch for classy style. Sometimes a simple hairdo is desirable and this one looks fabulous. The bangs are side swept and the sides are pulled back and secured to show of the beautiful facial features.

Aimee Teegarden has a cute look that sports a long sedu hairstyle with full bangs and a wide headband that matches her pink and blue outfit. This 18 year old has a fresh young look. Her dark blonde mane is sprinkled with chunky honey and light blonde highlights that give a great deal of depth to her 'do. Her forehead fringe is just dusting over her eyebrows and her turquoise hair accessory is placed over the top of the crown with a few strands from the sides left out to soften the face. Paris Hilton is known for her style and fashion choices and she does not disappoint here with her short light blue dress and bright red accessories such as her big designer sunglasses and matching hand bag. Her dress has red and white striped piping and bow tie. She is not afraid to take a fashion risk. Her hair is long and straight down to chin level where is turns to curls. She loves headbands and is wearing a wide one here. Since she recently had a medium length bob, one might assume that she is sporting some hair extensions, and of course, most likely her own line which is called DreamCatchers which are permanent and are done by a salon. This photo was taken at her launch along with Sally Beauty Supply of The Bandit.

This teen girl is all dressed up for a school dance 80s style. This picture was taken late in the decade and is something to see. She has a big curly mane which was so hot back then. Everybody had poodle perms. Her dress is strapless and fitted at the waist then it poofs out into a full skirt. Lots of black lace and pink accents make this a true retro treasure. The make-up is typical from this time period. Blue/green eye shadow and bright pink cheeks and lips were it.

Celebrities don't always have their hair styled perfectly and Katie Holmes is shown here arriving at rehearsals in Manhattan with her very short hairdo that is casually doing its own thing. Check her out here to see this same cut fixed up for an evening out. She has a bit of lift on top, the sides are brushed back over her ears, and the full bang is combed to the side. Her designer sunglasses are big have frames with an interesting shape and color.

Here's a little something with a bit of 80's retro, funky, emo, and just plain crazy. Just pick out a color, and then a pattern, and then another color that doesn't even match, and you have an outfit. It's apparently as easy as that according to these girls. This is a very funny baby hairstyle. This little boy back in 1960 is just waking up from a nap and has the funniest tuft of hair that is sticking up while he has his mouth wide open and eyes closed. These days, one might actually TRY to get a look like this!

This teenage boy is quite the heart throb if you ask a teen girl. Jansen Panettiere is Hayden's younger brother and he is retro ready with his full and wavy hairstyle with bangs that just brush over the eyebrows. The back comes down to the collar and the sides spring out with random tufts. His medium brown locks have hints of highlights which look great against his olive complexion and he is in the process of straightening his teeth with braces for the perfect smile. Take a look at how this this haircut closely matches this one from the 70s.

Sometimes something simple and easy can be the most attractive and this is what Lauren Conrad has chosen for her formal hairstyle while she hosts at evening at Christian Audigier The Nightclub at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. With an off-center part, locks are pulled back to brush over the ears and then secured in a low ponytail and cascades over one shoulder into soft and lovely waves. This is a nice accent to a strapless dress along with a dainty necklace not to be over-powering. This would be a great look for a special event like Homecoming.

Here is a cute little girl showing her version of retro with bright colors and a mix and match color scheme from head to toe. Her long blonde hair is pulled up into pigtails with ribbons and tassels and then she's got white tights with orange socks, red tennis shoes, yellow laces, and pink finger-less gloves. This might be a fun idea for a school dress up day or theme party.

Cowlicks can be the detriment of a hairstyle for a woman, especially if they turn up at the front of the hairline. Cowlicks are formed when tufts of hair emerge from the follicles at different angles from the rest of the mane. The cause is unknown but probably hereditary.

There are many famous people who deal with these pesky things on a daily basis. A well known actress, Tara Reid, shows how one of these troublesome traits can actually turn out to be an asset. Take a look at a picture of Tara with a hairstyle that incorporates this little tuft without any effort at all.

Ask your stylist to cut the strands surrounding the cowlick so that there is more weight in this difficult area. Many times the quirk will disappear when the hair surrounding it is cut to overlap it and therefor hide it making it possible to achieve your desired hairstyle. A good hairstylist at a reputable salon can make this happen.

Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners can often help tone down these pieces with a mind of their own. Softer strands are less likely to spring out of control than dryer strands. Styling cream and a good natural bristle paddle brush with a blow-dryer pointed in a downward direction should help to encourage the strands to lie down. This method should help to straighten the cowlick.

Training the beast with the use of hair accessories is another option. Use headbands or clips to hold the hair down and eventually this area should respond by redirecting the hair in that direction. Hair relaxers are another option to try. If all else fails, growing the cowlick ridden area longer will naturally weigh down the area making it harder for it to spring out of control.

Back in the late 80's, we tried to make our hair look as big as possible even if we had a fine or thin mane. Here in this photo taken back in the day, we can see a true retro experience with mouse, curling iron, and lots of hairspray. Lots of layering around the top of this wavy bob with bangs allows there to be lift on top gaining that big hair look. Volume producing hair products are worked into the roots prior to blow-drying then lifting with a vent brush while concentrating the air there will help to get this flash back look.

If you are looking for a little different variation on the long and wavy look, then take a peek at Lauren Conrad here as she has an almost partial updo with a side part and a side swoop. The strands can be anchored in the back with a fashion clip. She is seen here at The Do Something Awards: The Pre-Party of The Teen Choice Awards.

O.K., so if you are old enough to remember the 60s, you might recall wearing curlers to get the look, or might have memories of seeing women in the grocery stores with hairnets and those curl things especially if you were just a kid back then. If you were not born yet, consider yourself lucky that you did not have to endure this. This pre-teen girl is playing with some younger children while her locks dry into perfect little curls on the top of her head. This was any easy way to get some lift for those poofy 'dos. Notice the neatly arranged group of short strands right in front of her ear. They used Dippity Do for that.

Long and loose (beachy) waves are still hot for summer and fall. Blake Lively has the perfect blonde locks for this hairdo as she looks like her strands have been naturally highlighted by the sun's rays giving them the "just came out of the surf" look. There are hair products on the market to help achieve this or you can try using a diffuser on the blow-dryer with some scrunching or both.

This was taken at the Good Morning America taping and also shows her cute halter dress and layers of beaded necklaces for that retro feel.

If you are looking for a hairstyle idea for a woman with a round face who is also plus size, then this one may be a good choice. There are many more options out there for sure, but this picture shows a good example of how to minimize the shortness of the face and make it appear longer and also add enough interest as to bring focus and attention to to the lovely cut. This gals has medium brown locks with hints of copper highlights which add more depth. The layers start at about chin level and they serve the purpose to bring the eye down to make the face appear longer. The side swept bangs break up the symmetry that comes with a circular shape.
